Robotics for Kids

Robots fascinate children! Kids love robotics because it brings together science, engineering, and technology to create something incredible.

What is robotics for kids?

Robotics is the study of robots. Top universities worldwide are investing in robotics because the possibilities are endless. It’s a truly interdisciplinary space using AI, data science, coding, design, engineering, and more, to produce machines that replicate human actions in the real world. For children who enjoy building things, or playing with LEGOs, robotics is a great way to achieve similar results. Using computer programming, kids ages 6-10 can design, build, and code robots online.
Why robotics classes for kids work

Robotics classes and robotics camps teach students how coding is used in robotics through fun, hands-on projects. Students will learn how to navigate robots through virtual worlds and gain a deeper understanding of how robots can be used to solve problems through discussions of real-world applications.

As opposed to unstructured learning through trial and error or by using YouTube videos, learning through live instruction sets children up for success. In a live video class, instructors can provide feedback in the moment, and interacting with peers can create a sense of a class community. In addition small class sizes allow for more one-on-one time with the teacher, empowering the student to feel confident asking questions and, most importantly, to learn faster. Additionally, classes allow students to be creative which helps them develop a deeper understanding of the underlying robotics concepts.

In Create & Learn's live online robotics classes, students learn the basics of VEX Code and programming in 3-D while creating a simple robot. Students will learn how to navigate robots through virtual worlds and complete exciting maze challenges! VEXcode VR helps students code a virtual robot using the drag and drop programming language, Scratch. No robotics kit is necessary.

Robotics for kids facts

How do I get my child into robotics?

Robotics is a great area for kids to learn because it is a multidisciplinary area that involves building, coding, sensing and for more advanced one circuit building. Kids who enjoy building things get excited about robotics pretty easily. There are also some really cool movies about robots such as Big Hero 6, WALL-E, and Robots that show different aspects of robots. You can also build a robot together with your child. One of my favorites is Meccanoid which includes ~1000 parts. It is challenging but you might have even more fun than your child building it. :) And the moment it is turned on and calls your name is truly magical. Last but not the least, kids science museums often have areas for kids to explore robotics as well. Bring your kids there and have fun!

How do beginners learn robotics?

Many beginners learn robotics with toy robots because they work in the physical world. But it is pretty difficult to get a robot under $250 that has more than the most basic intelligence of moving, talking, and sensing. So a more effective way for beginners to learn robotics is to take classes and develop an understanding of robotics more systematically. For instance, in our Junior Robotics and Robot Adventure classes, students not only learn to drive robots and control their movement, but also solve puzzles and compete in virtual environments. We also use systems created by VEX, which means the code will work on their physical robots without any changes. Many parents have told us that after taking our classes, their kids were able to get their robot toys to do a lot more interesting things and they very much appreciate the virtual and physical world combination.

What are the benefits of robotics?

The benefits of robotics are multifold. Robots are very precise, great at repetitive work, can keep people safe, and do some things faster than humans can. They are also a lot of fun to learn.

Why is robotics important for the future?

Robotics is important for the future because robotics is already everywhere in our world - from our houses (e.g. iRobot vacuum) to Amazon’s warehouses, to automobile assembly lines and space shuttles. With the development of AI, robotics will become even more important and powerful. They will be driving cars, delivering goods, helping around in the house, and even exploring other planets for us. If your child would like to succeed in the future, a good understanding of robotics will help a great deal. Love it, if you love the future.

Best robot toys & kits for kids in 2024

The best robotics kit for beginners depends on your personal tradeoff between costs and features.

Lego EV3 and Vex IQ

There are the two most popular robots for middle school competitions, and many elementary school students start learning robotics using them as well. However both are fairly expensive. The New York Times published a review recently where these two robotics kits are the ones that stand out the most.

Meccanoid

As mentioned above, Meccanoid is very cool, though its mobility is pretty limited. One of the key areas of the overall robotics field is electronics. A great place to start learning is Snap Circuits.

Micro:bit and Arduino

Older kids can learn Micro:bit and Arduino. Get started with the ArduinoUno, an entry-level product that's easy to use and ready to power your first creative projects. And we have courses for both - Lights & Beats with Micro:Bit, and Robotics & Smart Devices: Arduino for Kids.

These virtually taught classes are so engaging, my son really enjoys them and is so excited to show us the coding projects he has completed on all 3 levels of Scratch Ninja. We will definitely be signing him up for more classes and thoroughly recommend Create & Learn to other parents.
