Great question. Even though AI is a very advanced technology, there are no prerequisites for young students to start learning AI, as classes can be designed to focus on conceptual understanding, without going into details of coding and math. If students need to go deeper or start building their own AI apps, then more background would be required for different class levels.

Among our AI classes, the free AI intro class has no prerequisites. The AI Explorer class introduces student to a wide range of AI topics, applications, and technologies. The only thing it requires is Scratch coding because there are several projects that use Scratch to build, for instance, a computer vision program to recognize hand rock, paper, and scissors.

The AI Creators class is more advanced and students do need to be familiar with Python to code various AI systems such as computer vision or large language models. Some understanding of linear algebra would help, but is not required.

The cost of AI classes for children vary depending on the specific course, its duration, and the topics covered. The term AI games may refer to two very different things - games that employ AI and educational games that teach kids about AI. Most games are the former, where AI is used to enhance game experiences, e.g. how NPCs may move, talk, or interact with players to enhance gaming experiences. These games generally do not teach about AI. For the latter, some cool simple games have been developed that teach students AI while playing a game.

AI toys and apps typically include AI functionalities, such as chat or computer vision. They can be fun to play with and are nice learning tools. However, their primary goal is typically not to teach students AI.

However, just like kids should be careful about browsing the Internet or watching YouTube videos, parents should be mindful that some AI answers may not be appropriate for kids. A number of popular AI tools, such as ChatGPT and Google Gemini specifically do not allow kids under 13 to use (this age limit may vary by country). When age limit is not a concern, parents or teachers should still make it clear to students several key things when using AI.

  • Information provided by AI may not be accurate or could be entirely fabricated, despite how confident sounding AI might be. Always think critically about what AI says.
  • Do not trust AI with their personal information as the conversation data are often used for training future AI systems
  • Most conversational AIs are designed to please the human it talks to with praises and are very agreeable. If kids want to get feedback, especially for something they are unsure of, they should talk to parents, family members, teachers, or friends.
