Central NY Chess

Enjoy professional scholastic chess instruction for any skill level.

Central New York Chess is a registered educational nonprofit, and an affiliate of the US Chess Federation. We are on a mission to teach critical thinking, logic, reasoning, and other life and social skills through scholastic chess instruction, to today's youth. Our classes are primarily directed at elementary & middle-school-aged children, with meetings combining lecture/discussion format with organized play between the students. We've been teaching these classes locally for years, but now are excited to share them with you in Summer Camp format, thanks to Create&Learn!

Refund Policy: Full refund before the camp begins. Once the camp starts, we can't provide refunds, but if your student misses a session (or sessions), we can try to coordinate a make-up in another section of the camp. Please message us to request make-up sessions.

  • Grades 2-8
  • This class is for young learners with little or no exposure to chess. We'll start by teaching the foundational basics of the game, and then build upon that foundation to introduce key strategies for winning games. Each meeting starts with explanation and discussion, followed by, for the remaining duration of each class, virtual chess games between the classmates, with live coaching and feedback by the instructor. We host our virtual games on ChessKid.com, the leading scholastic virtual chess platform; we provide all students with a premium "Gold Membership" to ChessKid while they are enrolled in our camps. By the end of this camp, students will have a thorough foundational understanding of the game of chess, how to plan ahead, and how to win against their peers. They will also leave with a basic understanding of how competitive chess tournaments are structured, and will feel prepared to compete against peers of their age and skill levels.
